What DEPARTMNT is
DEPARTMNT builds TapTech, the operating system for the real world: tags, a Portal and Core, used across six solutions.
DEPARTMNT builds TapTech: tags you can put on a product, a space or an event, a Portal that opens when someone taps, and Core, where a brand runs it all. This page covers why we exist, what TapTech is, who it is for and what you can build with it. It is for anyone deciding whether DEPARTMNT fits what they do in the real world.

Why we exist
Purpose. DEPARTMNT exists to bring connection back to the real world. Online fatigue, AI slop and social media saturation mean brands and consumers are both losing value online, while demand grows for real events and real connection. We help brands move back into that space with confidence, with new tools to build the experiences, and with proof of what they return.
Mission. To build the operating system for the real world. We connect people, products and places through technology that enhances real world experiences rather than replacing them. We aim to make the physical world as interactive, intelligent and connected as the digital one.
Vision. A world where presence becomes the new engagement. Physical things are no longer static but alive with identity, data and purpose. Our aim is to become the default infrastructure for physical to digital connection.
The real world is where a brand truly lives. Digital channels are measurable, programmable and connected, while physical moments have been a data black hole.
A single tap delivers the ability to measure, programme and connect them. We believe culture thrives in the streets, not on screens.
TapTech in one view
TapTech is the umbrella name for the whole system. It has three parts.
TagsPreprogrammed NFC tags in ten formats, with Standard or Advance tags.
PortalA branded web app built from modules. No app to download.
CoreThe client dashboard: set rules and rewards, see what happened.
People tap a tag to engage with a space, an activation or a product. The Portal is a direct channel to a brand's core fans, and it keeps changing after the tag is in the field. Core shows how people move through and interact with the space, the activation or the product.
A tag does not need a Portal, but the Portal unlocks the full journey and Core the full picture. Every deployment is managed by DEPARTMNT today, and self serve is a beta for selected Base, Studio and Label clients from Q4 2026, with the full platform going to selected clients in 2027. See How it works.
Who it is for
If you operate in the real world, TapTech is for you. It is built for IRL culture, and it comes as six solutions, each a starting point around the format that usually leads it. TapTech is not a seventh solution.
| Solution | The problem it answers | Lead format |
|---|---|---|
| Creator | Followers are rented. The room is yours. | Garment tag |
| Events | You sold every ticket. You met nobody. | Wristband |
| Experiential | Everyone loved the activation. Nobody can prove it. | On metal sticker |
| Retail | A queue down the street. Nothing to show for it on Monday. | Sticker sheet |
| Membership | Your members carry a card. It should open more than the door. | Card |
| Product | The sale is the last time you hear from most products. | Resin tag |
Most real projects borrow from two. The tags, the Portal and Core are the same across all six, so a festival can carry a retail pop up and a members' bar without starting again for each.
What you can build
Whatever the solution, TapTech gives a brand the same five things.
- Own your data
- Build direct relationships without relying on ads, cookies or third party platforms. Collect data offline and online, fill your data blind spot and gain actionable insight on the real world. You are the controller of the records collected in your own activation, and we are the processor.
- Build your offline platform
- Turn products, spaces and events into programmable media touchpoints. Presence based technology gives you a direct channel to customers, so you can reward real world engagement and give people a reason to turn up.
- Create value for customers
- Add value after the purchase and after the event. Smarter products and experiences unlock rewards, access and exclusivity, with no app to download.
- Drive loyalty and retention
- Keep the brand relationship going between spaces, between dates, and between the room and the phone. Each tag is an entry point back into the Portal, which remembers the person and grows with them.
- Validate real customers
- Physical presence cannot be faked. Clicks get botted and followers get bought, but you cannot buy ten thousand attendances. A tap needs a person, a phone and the object, in the same place.
Value compounds over time
One tap at one moment becomes the start of a connected brand experience. A person who taps a sticker at a pop up, a garment tag on what they bought and a membership card at the door builds one history with the brand, not three separate ones.
Value compounds in four ways: post purchase value, loyalty, data that compounds, and gamification. In practice:
- Products become data sources.
- Events become persistent engagement channels.
- Merch becomes membership.
- Venues become places you can measure.
For the people who tap, products unlock experiences, events continue after they leave, and taking part has value. They are not just buying or attending. They are unlocking access, rewards and community.
Why presence
Presence is the one signal a budget cannot buy. There are four reasons.
| Reason | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| It is expensive | Turning up costs time, travel and money in a way a click, a follow or an impression does not. That is why the signal is credible. |
| It cannot be faked | A tap needs a phone at the tag, as set out under Validate real customers above. |
| Spend cannot replace it | You can buy reach, but not attendance. It is the one audience a media budget cannot grow, which is why a sponsor should pay differently for it. |
| It is scarce | The people who turn up are worth more per head than the people who follow, and until now nobody could isolate them. |
DEPARTMNT is not a QR code platform, a ticketing system, a loyalty app or an activation agency. It is the layer underneath them all: the one record they feed.
Built with
Seven paying deployments across four territories: the UK, Korea, Singapore and the EU. Every figure below was verified on 21 August 2026 and belongs to its client's solution. No sales outcome is attributed to a tap.

Three more references have no tap figures yet. YOU Studio (Membership) is built and tested, and not yet trading. Rough Cut (Product) made ten one off garments, each with its own page. Genesis Collection with E Gucewicz (Product) was a proof of concept, never sold, and its casing became the TapTech hardware standard. Each solution is on Solutions.

What we value
Presence. Human presence is undervalued in the internet age, and it is the most expensive thing a person can give a brand. Turning up costs time, money and effort in a way a click never does. We build technology that lets presence be seen and valued, which opens a channel that has never existed rather than optimising one that already does.
Consent. Nothing is collected unless somebody decides to do something. A tag has to be approached and touched, deliberately, with an unlocked phone, and we build to that standard instead of around it. Where the choice is between knowing more and taking more, we would rather know less. See Data and privacy.
Democratisation. The real world, the streets, the free raves: this is where innovation and culture actually start. Social media confines creativity to the dimensions of a screen and the terms of somebody else's platform. Our ethos is closer to the travelling soundsystem: bring connected technology back to the streets, into the hands of real builders and real people.
